The Goat in Chelsea innovatively decided to move their cocktail club classes online over lockdown, and have continued doing them on Zoom ever since. An enjoyable treat to start your evening right, just 10 minutes from the buzzing Southbank.īread Street Kitchen's ‘The Classic’ cocktail masterclass is £40 per person. Rounding up the class, we made the quick and easy caipirinha – made with cachaça, sugar, and lime – to enjoy with our vegan platter of tomato soup, salad and padrón peppers. We then discussed the differences in top/low quality vodkas and tequilas, with a taste test for comparison. We got straight to work, making our choice of drinks with one-to-one tuition behind the bar from the energetic head bartender Marco. I opted for an espresso martini (best drunk straight away, when its fully foamy). Bellini in hand, we began our class – a truly personal experience where you can learn any cocktail you can think of, or a tailored recommendation for those who can't decide. This two hour class is cleverly structured to run through the fundamental styles of cocktail making, while also offering background knowledge on the premium ingredients and, above all, a focus on an interactive, hands-on experience for each participant. The grand finale was a competition between the stations to make the best drink, using any ingredients in the room. Wooden stations house bar areas stocked up with all the equipment and ingredients needed to create the four drinks on the evening schedule – a passionfruit martini, a Bakewell fizz, a pineapple picante smash and the pièce de résistance, a flaming zombie (which as the name suggests, we lit on fire at the end). Most impressively, however, are the separate workshop studios dedicated for teaching their mixology masterclasses. TT Liquor’s four-storey, converted Victorian police office in Shoreditch boasts its own front-room liquor store with over 1,000 different bottles, as well as a vintage-style cellar bar, cinema and rooftop bar. A unique way to experience the Harvey Nichols amenities and have an informative weekend morning. Then, with careful guidance behind the bar, each ‘trainee mixologist’ made their own concoction to enjoy with a delicious two-course lunch. Antonio filled us in with the tips and tricks of the trade, such as how to form an ombré effect by pouring juice down a bar spoon, and the importance of straining. Around the bar, the animated Antonio and Roberto led our class of 10 for this gin-themed masterclass, starting with an interesting and interactive history of gin and a tasting comparison of a London Dry gin and Roku Japanese Craft gin, followed by demonstrations and tastings of the Negroni, bramble and ‘la hermosa’ – made with rose, passionfruit, lime and raspberry. Not for the faint-hearted, the class starts at 9:30am with an afternoon-tea style breakfast in the food court cafe. On the top floor of the luxury chain’s flagship store is the The Fifth Floor Bar – the glamorous location for this morning masterclass – filled with plush velvet sofas, a central circle bar and views across Knightsbridge.
